ENTSO-E boosts regional energy security with enhanced electricity trade

In a significant move towards strengthening regional energy security, the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity (ENTSO-E) announced today an increase in the capacity for electricity trade between Europe, Ukraine, and Moldova by 500 megawatts (MW).

This decision, effective immediately, elevates the total capacity to 1,700 MW, marking a substantial step forward in facilitating energy exchange across the region.

The decision stems from the successful completion of the synchronisation process between the energy systems of Ukraine and Moldova with the continental system, achieved in March 2022. This landmark development paved the way for enhanced cooperation between European TSOs and Ukrenergo, the Ukrainian transmission system operator.

"ENTSO-E applauds the new level of collaboration between the TSOs of continental Europe and Ukrenergo," remarked ENTSO-E President Zbyněk Boldiš. "This advancement not only reinforces regional energy security but also fosters a more integrated and efficient energy market. It further underscores our unwavering commitment to fostering a resilient and interconnected electricity grid, while promoting cooperation among European TSOs."

Strengthening Energy Independence

For Moldova, the increased electricity trade capacity holds particular significance, as it contributes to bolstering the country's energy independence. Commenting on this development, Victor Parlicov, Moldova's Minister of Energy, emphasised, "The synchronisation of the national energy system with the continental ENTSO-E has played a pivotal role in solidifying the energy independence of the Republic of Moldova. This advancement, rather than the diversification of natural gas procurement sources, has been the most crucial factor in ensuring the stability of our energy system, particularly amidst the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. It has also enabled us to progress on other critical reforms, including those with long-term implications."

ENTSO-E: A Driving Force in European Energy Cooperation

ENTSO-E stands as a cornerstone of European energy cooperation, serving as the association for the collaboration of European transmission system operators (TSOs). The organisation's 39 member TSOs, representing 35 countries, bear the responsibility of ensuring the safe and coordinated operation of the European electricity system, the largest interconnected electricity grid globally.
