EU bolsters Moldova's border security with vehicle donation

The European Union (EU) has further strengthened Moldova's border security and refugee management capabilities with a donation of 37 cars to the Moldovan Border Police (IBP) and seven cars to the General Inspectorate for Migration (IGM).

The new vehicles, presented today, November 30, 2023, at a donation ceremony in Chișinău, were procured under the project "Supporting the Protection, Transit, Voluntary and Informed Return, and Reintegration of Eastern Partnership Citizens and Third-Country Nationals Affected by the Conflict in Ukraine."

"This donation will contribute to improved mobility and increased operational capabilities of IBP and IGM staff, including strengthening border security and efficient management of the migration flow," stated Interior Minister Adrian Efros.

"These new equipment helps in the work of the authorities to provide all the support to refugees. Thus, the fleet of the two Inspectorates, IGPF and IGM, increases considerably through these contributions," Efros added.

EU Ambassador to Moldova Jānis Mažeiks emphasised the EU's unwavering support for Moldova in its border security and refugee management endeavours. "This donation will allow border guards to work in better conditions, with equipment adapted to the needs on the ground," Mažeiks remarked.

Mažeiks further highlighted the strong partnership between the EU and the Ministry of Internal Affairs. "Through this donation, we reiterate our firm commitments and common vision regarding the consolidation of security in the region," he asserted.

The donation of the new vehicles marks a significant step forward in enhancing Moldova's border security infrastructure and its ability to effectively manage the flow of refugees. With increased mobility and improved operational capabilities, Moldovan border guards will be better equipped to fulfil their critical duties.
