Ukraine: Ceasefire unacceptable without complete Russian withdrawal

Ukrainian Parliament Speaker Ruslan Stefanchuk declared Thursday that a ceasefire without the complete withdrawal of Russian troops and weapons from all Ukrainian territory would only create a temporary respite in the war.

In a speech to Moldovan lawmakers, Stefanchuk warned that the ceasefire would be used by the aggressor to regroup and rebuild its forces for a stronger attack on Ukrainian territory in the future. He stated that the only way to restore and establish respect for and the principles of the UN Charter is the peace formula proposed by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

“We already see that it is gaining more and more support and is gradually taking on a global character,” he said. “Recent global events have shown that more and more institutions and countries in the world understand the urgency of our peace plan as an alternative to ending the war.”

Stefanchuk also expressed his gratitude to Moldovans for their solidarity at the beginning of the war. “I sincerely thank the people of Moldova for opening your borders and homes to tens of thousands of Ukrainian women and children fleeing Russian terror,” he said.

The Ukrainian parliament speaker is currently on an official visit to Moldova. This is his first visit to Chisinau since becoming the Verkhovna Rada’s head.
