Fruit exports skyrocket as EU tariffs drop
Moldova's fruit exports to the European Union (EU) have experienced a remarkable surge in recent years, driven by the suspension of tariffs and import quotas by the EU on Moldovan products.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry, this decision has paved the way for unrestricted export of seven key categories of Moldovan produce, including tomatoes, garlic, table grapes, apples, cherries, plums, and grape juice.
The impact of this policy shift is evident in the substantial increase in export volumes. For instance, cherry exports to the EU have skyrocketed from a mere 75 tons in 2021 to a staggering 2,600 tons in the first 10 months of 2023, representing a staggering 580% growth. Similarly, apple exports have witnessed a significant jump, from 1,000 tons in 2021 to 11,000 tons in 2023, while plum exports more than doubled, reaching 55,000 tons from 27,000 tons in the corresponding period. Grape exports have also shown impressive growth, climbing from 17,000 tons in 2021 to 25,000 tons in 2023.
