Las Vegas campus attack: Three dead
In a tragic incident, an armed man opened fire, killing at least three people on Wednesday on the campus of the University of Las Vegas, before being fatally shot by the police.
This event evokes emotions in a city that was already a victim of one of the deadliest mass shootings in the United States in 2017, according to Hotnews.ro.
"Three of the victims have been confirmed deceased," stated Las Vegas Sheriff Kevin McMahill before the press. Another person was injured and is in a "stable condition," he added.
Gunshots were reported late in the morning on the campus of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, located about two kilometres from the world-famous strip known for its casinos.
The suspect, a man whose identity has not yet been disclosed by authorities, was shot dead very quickly during a confrontation with the police.
Students were gathering outside when the attack occurred, and "countless other lives could have been lost" without the swift action of law enforcement, said the sheriff. Several officers, some off-duty, intervened "without hesitation within minutes," he added.
The university cancelled classes and urged everyone on campus to stay indoors as the police evacuated buildings one by one to eliminate any other threats.
The gunfire caused panic in the area, with several students recounting to the local press how they took shelter for minutes inside buildings.
This tragedy also reopens the wounds of the massacre suffered by Las Vegas in 2017, one of the worst in U.S. history. At that time, a man killed 58 people and injured hundreds when he opened fire on a crowd at a country music concert from the 32nd floor of a hotel. The man then committed suicide.
