Moldova's EU accession hopes on hold: Experts weigh in
Whether Moldova joins the European Union hangs in the balance as the crucial December 14-15 summit approaches, with experts highlighting the influence of geopolitics on the final decision.
During a public debate at IPN, political analysts emphasised that while the European Commission has recommended launching formal accession negotiations with Moldova, the path forward remains uncertain due to the ongoing war in Ukraine and Hungary's opposition to Ukraine's inclusion.
Geopolitics clouds EU-Moldova relations:
"The final decision of the European Council could be delayed until March next year," stated Dorina Baltag, a foreign policy researcher. "Some states are conditioning the launch of negotiations with Ukraine, which is currently linked to Moldova's application."
Baltag noted that while Moldova hasn't met all the preconditions for accession, the geopolitical context has accelerated the process. "This is the first time the Commission has recommended starting negotiations before a country fully meets all the criteria," she explained.
Economic readiness crucial:
Political commentator Nicolae Negru emphasised the need for economic preparedness alongside political progress. "If Moldova joins the EU, its economy must be able to withstand the competition," he warned. "While assistance will be available, it's not a free ride."
Time is of the essence:
Igor Boțan, another political commentator, stressed the urgency of starting negotiations immediately after the December summit. "The EU agenda will be preoccupied with elections and reforms in the coming year," he reasoned.
EU divided on Ukraine's inclusion:
The inclusion of Ukraine in the same negotiation package as Moldova has created a hurdle. While the European Parliament and Commission support a joint approach, Hungary has voiced objections.
Decision hinges on political will:
Ultimately, the fate of Moldova's EU aspirations rests on the political will of member states. The December summit will be a pivotal moment, with the potential to open the door to a new chapter in Moldova's history or prolong the uncertainty.
