MEP: Separating Moldova, Ukraine from EU bid could backfire
In the ongoing dialogue about Moldova and Ukraine's aspirations to join the European Union, MEP Ramona Strugariu has stressed the importance of keeping the two countries together in the process. Separating them, she contends, could harm their existing strong relationship.
Strugariu, speaking to Radio Free Europe, emphasised the shared history and interconnectedness between Moldova and Ukraine. "There are many things that bind these two countries," she said, citing energy, politics, and the ongoing reconstruction efforts in Ukraine. "Imagine the impact on the people and leadership in Kiev if someone were to suggest decoupling Moldova from Ukraine's path."
Strugariu's views come amid Moldova and Ukraine's joint efforts to secure EU membership. Both countries applied in March 2022 and have received candidate status recommendations from the European Commission. The final decision, however, lies with the European Council at their upcoming summit in December.
Meanwhile, Moldovan Foreign Minister Nicu Popescu emphasised the crucial role of domestic reforms in determining the speed of the accession process. He underscores the significance of focusing on Moldova's own reform efforts and progress.
