Moldova freezes health insurance costs for 2024
Good news for Moldovans: the cost of mandatory health insurance will remain unchanged in 2024, confirmed Health Minister Ala Nemerenco. The premium will remain at 12,636 lei (around $700) for those who do not purchase individual insurance by the March 31 deadline.
However, early birds can benefit from a reduced rate of 4,056 lei (approximately $220) during the first quarter of the year. Additionally, Nemerenco confirmed that existing discounts for various categories, such as agricultural land owners and freelance professionals, will remain in place.
"The cost for owners of agricultural land not included in other categories remains at 1,014 lei," Nemerenco said. "Other categories, like retail businesses excluding excisable goods, will continue to pay 1,622 lei. Individual enterprises, land lessors, and patent holders will pay 2,028 lei, while notaries, lawyers, bailiffs, translators, and other freelance professionals will pay 4,056 lei."
Looking ahead, the Ministry of Health anticipates a 6.1% increase in mandatory health insurance fund revenues in 2024, exceeding 15.4 billion lei (around $870 million). This growth will be driven by a 15.1% rise in employee contributions, reaching 8 billion lei (approximately $450 million). Individual contributions are also expected to increase, reaching 162 million lei (about $9 million).
On the spending side, the Ministry projects a 6.1% increase in mandatory health insurance funds, reaching 15.4 billion lei (around $870 million).
