Zelenski, in Argentina at the inauguration of President Javier Milea
The Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky, will be in Argentina today to participate in the inauguration ceremony of the elected president of Argentina, Javier Milei, AFP reports. After Milei won the election, Volodymyr Zelenskiy congratulated him and thanked him for his support for Ukraine.
Other foreign leaders will also attend the ceremony, and Russia will be represented by its ambassador in Buenos Aires, Dmitri Feoktistov.
The Ukrainian president said that he met with the prime minister of the West African country Cape Verde on his way to Argentina.
Ukrainian media speculated this week that Milea's inauguration could serve as the backdrop for a meeting between Zelenskiy and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban to solve differences over Ukraine's bid for the European Union.
Next week's EU summit will decide whether to start talks with Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova regarding their candidacy for membership. A decision must be taken unanimously, and Orban has repeatedly expressed his opposition to starting talks now.
Zelenski's chief of staff Andriy Yermak said this week that he was trying to set a suitable date for a meeting between the president and Orban.
Like the new Argentine president, Orban is a supporter of right-wing views. In a Saturday post on X, formerly Twitter, he stated that he had already met Milei. Orban welcomed the electoral success of the right "not only in Europe, but in the whole world".
