Austria's three conditions to welcome Romania into Air Schengen
The Austrian Ministry of the Interior transmitted, at the request of the Digi24 station, what are Austria's conditions for accepting Romania in Schengen, but - importantly - only for air transport. The lifting of land border controls is the subject of separate discussions.
Austria formulated three conditions to lift air border controls for Romania, according to the answer received by Digi24.
- Further strengthening of protection at the external borders of the European Union. The presence of Frontex (border police of the European Union - n.r.) at the Bulgarian-Turkish border should be at least tripled. Also, the financial support for the protection of the Bulgarian and Romanian external borders had to be "substantially" increased. 2. Strengthened border controls at the land borders between Bulgaria and Romania, as well as between Romania and Hungary. 3. "Take responsibility for migrants who have arrived illegally in Austria" - is the third condition formulated by the Austrian Ministry of the Interior.
"If these conditions are met, Austria can agree to (receiving Romania in) Air Schengen" (for the airspace - n.r.), reads the reply from Vienna. Austrian Interior Minister Gerhard Karner is ready to accept Romania's entry into the Schengen Area in terms of airports, provided that Romania and Bulgaria accept migrants from Syria and Afghanistan and increased border controls between Bulgaria and Romania and between Hungary and Romania, wrote the Austrian publications on Saturday.
