Popescu in Brussels, Paris to advance Moldova's EU aspirations
Moldova's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Nicu Popescu embarks on a two-leg European tour this week, aiming to solidify his country's path towards EU membership.
Popescu's first stop is Brussels, where he will engage in crucial discussions with EU officials, including Gert-Jan Koopman, Director General of the influential Directorate-General for Neighborhood and Enlargement Negotiations. Bilateral meetings are also scheduled with counterparts from EU member states, providing a platform to discuss Moldova's progress and address key concerns.
The second leg of the tour takes Popescu to Paris, where he will participate in the OECD Eurasia Week. This event presents a significant opportunity for Moldova, as Popescu is set to sign a memorandum of understanding with the OECD, fostering collaboration in areas crucial to the country's development and European integration aspirations. Additionally, bilateral meetings with French officials will further strengthen diplomatic relations.
These strategic engagements come at a pivotal moment for Moldova. The European Council is poised to make a momentous decision on whether to open accession negotiations with the country at the end of this week. Popescu remains optimistic about Moldova's prospects: "We are confident in meeting the necessary criteria for accession. Our unwavering commitment to European integration is reflected in our ongoing progress across all sectors. We are prepared for the next stage of this journey."
