U.S. officials confirm Houthi attack on cargo vessel
According to two American defence officials, the missile, launched by Houthi rebels, struck the cargo ship STRINDA, causing a fire and damages. Fortunately, there were no casualties in the attack, as reported by Agerpres.ro.
The incident occurred approximately 111 kilometres north of the Bab el-Mandeb strait around 21:00 GMT, one official stated. The USS Mason destroyer was present and provided assistance, according to officials.
Since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war on October 7, Houthi rebels, supported by Iran, have been targeting vessels in vital maritime routes and launching drones and rockets towards Israel.
On Saturday, Houthi rebels declared their intention to target all ships heading towards Israel, regardless of nationality, and warned international maritime companies to avoid dealing with Israeli ports.
It is not immediately clear whether the STRINDA had any connection to Israel or if it was heading to an Israeli port.
Controlling a significant part of Yemen, Houthi rebels claim these attacks demonstrate support for Palestinians, vowing to continue until Israel halts its offensive in the Gaza Strip.
The Houthi rebels are part of the "Axis of Resistance," aligned with Iran, targeting Israeli and American interests.
