EU bolsters Moldova's defence with €87M military aid
The National Army of Moldova has received a substantial boost to its capabilities with the delivery of a substantial military aid package from the European Union (EU).
Delivered through the European Peace Facility (EPF), this assistance marks a crucial step in strengthening Moldova's national security, stability, and resilience.
Jānis Mažeiks, Head of the EU Delegation to Chisinau, highlighted the significance of this aid, stating that "Moldova has become the second largest beneficiary of this program, after Ukraine, receiving equipment valued at €87 million." The package includes an array of critical equipment, including drones for terrain scanning, mine detectors, explosive extraction tools, protective gear, engineering suits, medical kits, and generators, all aimed at significantly enhancing the capacity of the "Codru" Engineering Battalion and the National Army as a whole.
Expressing his gratitude for the EU's unwavering support, Defense Minister Anatolie Nosatîi noted that "this equipment will significantly enhance our ability to protect our nation and safeguard our borders in the face of current threats." He further emphasised that "this recent assistance marks the beginning of a long-term partnership, with additional projects planned to further strengthen Moldova's defence capabilities in the coming years."
Beyond the immediate impact of this specific aid package, the EU's commitment to Moldova's security extends further. In 2021, the bloc established the EPF, a dedicated platform designed to provide military and defence assistance to partner countries. This initiative demonstrates the EU's ongoing commitment to promoting peace and stability within its region and beyond.
