Charles Michel: The main obstacle for the accession negotiations of the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine is the opposition of the Prime Minister of Hungary
The main obstacle to a positive decision for the accession negotiations of the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine is the opposition of the Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orbán, said the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, in an interview for Free Europe. Two days before the European Union summit where enlargement will also be discussed, the official says he is confident in the success of the meeting and that European leaders are working to convince Hungary.
"It will be a difficult meeting and we have to tell the truth because we have the support of 26 leaders out of 27, which is very good news. At the same time, we have a country – Hungary – that expresses some doubts and some reluctance. We have to convince Hungary and we are working for it day and night for the preparation of this European Council. And I hope we will succeed," said Charles Michel.
We remind you that in November, the Republic of Moldova received the green light from the European Commission to open accession negotiations to the community block until the end of the year. The final decision would be taken by the European Council at the end of this week, at the meeting of the EU member countries.
