Mureșan: It would not be right for Hungary to block the launch of negotiations with the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine
The Republic of Moldova and Ukraine have fulfilled the commitments they assumed when they were granted the status of candidate countries for accession and deserve to start negotiations for this process, MEP Siegfried Mureșan said on Radio Moldova. According to the official, it would not be right for Hungary to block the launch of negotiations with these two countries. Regarding the European Commission's unblocking of over 10 billion euros for Hungary, it has nothing in common with the decision to be taken by the European Council regarding the launch of accession negotiations, Siegfried Mureșan said.
"The decision to start accession negotiations for the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine must be taken strictly based on the merits of the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine. Both the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine meet all the conditions. Any other artificial argument from the Hungarian Prime Minister would be incorrect. It is an important symbolic decision. But it is also important that the reform work continues and between the Republic of Moldova and the EU so many things are happening together now: cooperation, support, reform. I don't know yet what the final decision will be tomorrow. I am confident that it will be a positive one", said Siegfried Mureșan.
We remind that today and tomorrow in Brussels the European Council will discuss the expansion of the European Union, but also the reforms in the countries aspiring to join, including the launch of negotiations with the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine.
