Moldova bolsters security: New strategy unveiled
In a decisive move, the Moldovan Parliament has approved a comprehensive National Security Strategy, replacing the outdated 2011 document.
This legislative initiative, championed by President Maia Sandu, secured broad support from 59 deputies and outlines a robust framework for safeguarding the nation's security in the face of a rapidly changing geopolitical landscape.
Building Bridges for Stability:
A cornerstone of the strategy is the active pursuit of stronger ties with key strategic partners like the European Union (EU), Romania, the United States, and NATO. President Sandu underscored the importance of these partnerships, stating, "We must forge closer bonds with those who share our values and commitment to security." This enhanced collaboration aims to bolster Moldova's resilience against external threats and ensure its continued path towards European integration.
Countering Hybrid Threats and Bolstering Resilience:
Acknowledging the ripple effects of the ongoing war in Ukraine on Moldovan security, the strategy emphasises building national resilience against hybrid threats like disinformation campaigns and cyberattacks. This proactive approach aims to mitigate the impact of these evolving tactics and safeguard critical infrastructure.
Modernising Defence and Tackling Corruption:
The plan prioritises the modernization of the Moldovan armed forces, equipping them with the necessary capabilities to defend the country's sovereignty and territorial integrity. This includes investments in technology, training, and equipment upgrades. Additionally, the strategy recognizes the crucial role of strong institutions and a robust anti-corruption framework in building a secure future for Moldova.
A Six-Year Roadmap for National Security:
The newly adopted National Security Strategy will guide Moldova's security efforts for the next six years. It will serve as a blueprint for policy development and resource allocation in the defence and security sectors. Furthermore, the Supreme Security Council will closely monitor and coordinate the strategy's implementation, ensuring its effectiveness and consistent application.
