Fragile to formidable: Moldova charts security path, seeks EU embrace
Moldova has charted a critical course towards bolstering national resilience with the adoption of its new National Security Strategy.
In a move lauded by President Maia Sandu as a "proactive response to the evolving geopolitical landscape," the document outlines a comprehensive framework for safeguarding the country's future.
Facing Multifaceted Threats: Recognizing the complex nature of the security environment, the strategy identifies two primary threats:
External: The "aggressive policy of the Russian Federation against Moldova and against peace in general," acknowledging the destabilising influence of Russia's actions in the region.
Internal: "Deeply rooted corruption within Moldova," highlighting the detrimental impact of entrenched corruption on national security and governance.
Vision for a Stronger Moldova: The strategy outlines three ambitious yet achievable objectives:
Safeguarding Sovereignty and Territorial Integrity: This cornerstone objective prioritises upholding Moldova's independence and preventing external interference.
Building a Robust and Resilient State: The document emphasises strengthening institutions, particularly the defence and security sector, to effectively manage internal and external challenges.
EU Membership as the Strategic Anchor: Joining the European Union is positioned as the ultimate guarantor of Moldova's security, stability, and prosperity.
Pathways to Success: To translate these objectives into reality, the strategy proposes a multi-pronged approach:
Defence and Security Modernization: Investing in capabilities, fostering international partnerships, and enhancing interoperability are key priorities.
Peaceful Resolution of the Transnistrian Conflict: The document reiterates Moldova's commitment to finding a sustainable solution through diplomatic means.
Uncompromising Fight against Corruption: Uprooting corruption is deemed essential for building a strong, transparent, and accountable state.
Countering Disinformation and Cyber Threats: Protecting national security in the information age necessitates robust measures against disinformation and cyber threats.
Active Contribution to Regional and International Security: Engaging with partners and contributing to global security efforts further strengthens Moldova's position.
From Vulnerability to Resilience: President Sandu's vision for Moldova is one of resilience: "to transform from a vulnerable state into a strong, modern, and European state, capable of taking care of its citizens and securing its place in the world." The new National Security Strategy serves as a roadmap for achieving this vision, navigating the complex security landscape and paving the way for a more secure and prosperous future for all Moldovans.
