Moldova joins EU talks queue: Romania eyed for boost
In a landmark decision, the European Council has paved the way for Moldova to embark on the official path towards EU membership.
This historic vote marks a turning point for the nation, opening doors to closer political and economic ties with the bloc.
While acknowledging the "tense discussions" surrounding the decision, MEP Ramona Strugariu underscored Moldova's preparedness, stating, "The country has demonstrably met all the criteria for accession." She lauded progress in areas like judicial reform and anti-corruption initiatives, highlighting Moldova's commitment to fulfilling the prerequisites for membership.
However, Strugariu emphasised that "negotiations are just the first step." She urged both Moldovan authorities and the EU to "mobilise all resources" to ensure a smooth and successful integration process. Strugariu identified infrastructure development and energy independence as crucial priorities, urging Romania to step up its support for Moldova's EU aspirations.
"Romania, as a close neighbour and fellow EU member, has a critical role to play," Strugariu declared. She called for prioritised investments in transportation corridors and energy connections, suggesting the potential redirection of the 600 million euros initially allocated to Ukraine towards Moldova's post-war reconstruction efforts, akin to a "Marshall Plan" for the nation.
The EU's commitment to Moldova's future is demonstrably strong. Over 1 billion euros in aid has been provided since 2021, and pre-accession instruments are set to follow from 2025. However, Strugariu emphasised the need for "prudent management of these resources" to ensure they effectively address critical priorities.
While challenges undoubtedly remain on the road ahead, Moldova has taken a significant step towards its European ambitions. With continued dedication from both Moldovan authorities and its partners, the nation can overcome these hurdles and secure its rightful place within the EU family.
