KIV retires: Chisinau Airport embraces RMO
Signalling a strategic shift towards international alignment and independent identity, Chisinau International Airport will implement a new International Air Transport Association (IATA) code, RMO, effective January 18, 2024.
This move replaces the airport's legacy code, KIV, a remnant of its Soviet-era designation.
"Effective January 18, 2024, Chisinau International Airport will transition to the IATA code RMO, an abbreviation for Republic of Moldova," declared Andrei Spînu, Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development. "The previous KIV, derived from the historical Russian city name, will be phased out to ensure streamlined operations and international clarity."
This update signifies a multi-faceted advancement for the airport. Firstly, it aligns with contemporary IATA recommendations encouraging the use of official state designations in airport codes. This harmonisation facilitates accurate data tracking and enhances operational efficiency within the global aviation network.
Secondly, the shift sheds light on Moldova's ongoing pursuit of a distinct national identity. Replacing KIV, often mistaken for the code of the Ukrainian capital Kiev, fosters clarity and reinforces Chisinau's unique presence on the international stage.
The transition to RMO is expected to be smooth, with airlines and travel agencies implementing the change well in advance of the switch date. Passengers are advised to consult their travel documents and airline websites for any minor adjustments related to the new code.
