Books & E-Readers: Moldova upgrades libraries for diverse readers

In response to evolving reading habits and the rise of digital formats, Moldova's libraries are adopting innovative strategies to reignite public interest in books.

From invigorating traditional book clubs and author meet-and-greets to embracing e-readers and audiobooks, these cultural institutions are adapting to cater to diverse reading preferences.

"Libraries are actively implementing programs and campaigns to promote reading," said Mariana Harjevschi, director of the Chisinau Municipal Library. "Collaboration with writers, schools, and other stakeholders is key, along with initiatives like book clubs and author events." However, she acknowledges the growing demand for electronic options, particularly among younger generations, highlighting the need for expanding e-reader collections.

The Ministry of Culture plays a crucial role in replenishing library shelves through its Book Publishing Program. "This program provides co-financing to publishing houses," explained Minister of Culture Sergiu Prodan. "The cost per book is directly tied to the print run, so larger print runs result in lower costs. By purchasing 300 to 500 copies in advance, we support publishers and ensure these books reach libraries nationwide."

Prodan further emphasised the recent collaboration with charitable organisations, securing a significant annual influx of English-language books for Moldovan libraries. "Nearly half of this collection, totaling approximately 500,000 books, will cater to children and adolescents, offering a diverse selection of novels and specialised works," he noted.

Beyond individual libraries, the government's commitment to reading extends to nationwide initiatives. In 2023, library book funds across Moldova received a substantial boost, reaffirming the importance of ensuring widespread access to literature. With over 1,300 public libraries spanning the country, these efforts aim to solidify reading as a cherished cultural cornerstone for future generations.
