ILO Convention enhances worker protections in Moldova
In a significant step towards bolstering worker protections, the Moldovan Cabinet of Ministers has approved the ratification of the International Labour Organization (ILO) Convention No. 190 on Violence and Harassment in the World of Work.
This international treaty offers a comprehensive framework for combating workplace violence and harassment, and its adoption by Moldova marks a positive stride towards safer work environments for all.
"The ratification and implementation of the Convention will contribute to the improvement of the regulatory framework in the field for the elimination of violence and harassment in the world of work," affirmed Alexei Buzu, Minister of Labour and Social Protection. He further highlighted the Convention's significance as "the first international instrument that establishes specific standards applied globally to combat harassment and violence related to work."
The Convention provides a clear definition of workplace violence and harassment, encompassing physical, psychological, sexual, and economic harm. Notably, it applies to all workers, regardless of employment status or sector, ensuring comprehensive protection within the formal and informal economies. By outlining specific roles and responsibilities for governments and social partners, the Convention paves the way for effective prevention, intervention, and remedy mechanisms.
"Ratification and implementation of the Convention by Moldova will contribute to the improvement of the legislation in the field by providing more clarifications and real solutions for employers and employees regarding measures and processes related to the prevention and combating of violence, harassment at the workplace," emphasised Minister Buzu.
This move strengthens Moldova's commitment to creating a safer and more equitable work environment, echoing its previous adoption of the Istanbul Convention in 2022. The ILO Convention No. 190 is expected to enter into force within the country one year following the official deposit of the instrument of ratification.
