Moldova lawmakers prioritise economy, justice in final 2023 session
Moldova's parliamentarians convene for their final session of 2023 on December 28th, tackling a diverse agenda encompassing economic revitalization, legal reforms, and international commitments.
Boosting Enterprise and Education:
Central to the proceedings is the ratification of a vital loan agreement with Poland's Bank Gospodarstwa Krajowego. "This loan represents a crucial investment in our small and medium-sized enterprises," declared Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu, underscoring its potential to fuel Moldova's entrepreneurial landscape. Further bolstering economic prospects, lawmakers will consider facilitating imports for initiatives "improving the quality of education," a move aimed at strengthening the nation's human capital.
Enhancing Governance and Accountability:
Strengthening legal frameworks receives prominent attention, with proposed amendments to the "law on veterans" potentially benefiting those who served their country. Additionally, parliamentarians will scrutinise plans to "strengthen the capacities of the National Institute of Justice," aiming to bolster the administration of justice. In a bid to combat misinformation, civil society representatives Petru Macovei and Valeriu Pașa are nominated to join the Center for Strategic Communication and Countering Disinformation.
Addressing Energy and Corruption:
The session grapples with Moldova's energy sector, with a dedicated bill on "natural gas" on the agenda. Understanding the government's commitment to transparency and accountability, lawmakers will delve into the "National Integrity and Anti-Corruption Program for 2024-2028," outlining a comprehensive strategy to tackle graft.
International Solidarity and Cultural Preservation:
Moldova's international engagement takes centre stage with the proposed accession to the "Partial Extended Agreement on the Registry of Damages Caused by the Aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine." This move signifies solidarity with neighbouring Ukraine and a commitment to documenting the conflict's devastating impact. Finally, safeguarding cultural heritage takes priority with the discussion of the "National Culture Fund."
The session convenes at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, marking the culmination of a productive legislative year for Moldova.
