Moldova charts EU course: Scrutinising laws, building expertise
Moldova has taken a significant step towards its potential European Union membership with the announcement of a comprehensive assessment of its legal alignment with EU standards.
The assessment, as declared by Cristina Gherasimov, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration during a Radio Moldova broadcast, will delve deep into all 35 chapters of the acquis communautaire, meticulously examining the compatibility of national laws with EU norms.
"This in-depth review is imperative to identify areas where our legislation needs adjustments to conform to EU standards," remarked Gherasimov. "Only with a precise understanding of the remaining challenges can we effectively strategize for Moldova's preparedness for EU membership."
Expected to be finalised by the end of 2024, the assessment paves the way for potential accession negotiations. Further solidifying its commitment to EU integration, the Moldovan government plans to establish a dedicated Office for European Integration within the State Chancellery. This office will be the nerve centre for managing the domestic aspects of the accession process, including the meticulous harmonisation of national legislation with EU standards.
"The creation of this office underscores our government's unwavering resolve to pursue EU membership," emphasised Gherasimov. "It guarantees the allocation of necessary resources and expertise to navigate the accession process with utmost success."
While the launch of official negotiations hinges on the European Commission's approval of the Negotiations Framework, Moldova's proactive steps, including the comprehensive assessment and dedicated office, showcase its resolute pursuit of EU integration.
