€23m injects life into Moldova's rail network
The Moldovan State Railway Company (CFM) has identified infrastructure improvement as a top priority for 2024, with plans to rehabilitate key sections of the country's rail network. Director Oleg Tofilat outlined two major projects:
Southern Corridor: Stretching from Bender to Giurgiulești via Căușeni and Basarabeasca, this crucial trade route connects Moldova with the Black Sea.
Northern Corridor: Aimed at strengthening connectivity with Ukraine, this project will link Vălcineț or Otaci with the southern corridor at Căinari.
Securing a €23 million loan from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) will significantly boost these efforts. The funds will specifically target the Vălcineț-Ocnița-Bălți-Ungheni-Chișinău-Căinari line, spanning 446 kilometres.
These rehabilitation projects are anticipated to enhance logistics efficiency for freight transportation and shorten travel times for passengers. Improvements to both the northern and southern corridors are expected to contribute to smoother trade and stronger regional connections for Moldova.
