Snow shuts Chisinau: Schools, offices closed, transit halted
Battling heavy snowfall and forecasted blizzards, Chisinau officials implemented emergency measures on Monday, January 8th.
The city's Emergency Situations Commission (CSE) announced a two-day extension of the winter break for students, effective immediately.
"Due to the ongoing snowfall and predicted hazardous conditions," the CSE declared, "all schools in Chisinau will remain closed until January 10th, inclusive."
The shutdown extends beyond schools, as the CSE also decreed the temporary closure of most public institutions. Only crucial services, such as healthcare and snow removal teams, will continue operating. Additionally, public transportation within the city is suspended until 4:00 PM, allowing for snow clearance efforts to prioritise essential routes.
Balti, Moldova's second-largest city, followed suit earlier on Monday, extending its student winter break by two days. Meteorologists warn of persistent snowfall and strong winds throughout the day, leading to significant drifting and icy road conditions. Temperatures are expected to plummet, reaching lows of -10°C to -20°C overnight.
With these measures in place, Chisinau aims to prioritise safety and minimise disruptions as the blizzard unfolds. Residents are urged to exercise caution, avoid unnecessary travel, and stay informed about weather updates.
