Macron's younger gamble: New PM to revamp presidency

In a move interpreted as a bid to revitalise his presidency, Emmanuel Macron tapped 34-year-old Gabriel Attal as France's new prime minister on Tuesday.

Attal becomes the youngest person to hold the post, injecting fresh energy into Macron's administration amidst dwindling poll numbers and upcoming European Parliament elections.

"Emmanuel Macron is hoping to move beyond the turbulence of his second term with this bold appointment," explains Digi 24. While policy shifts may be limited, the aim is to shift public attention, potentially boosting Macron's centrist party in June's European vote.

Currently trailing Marine Le Pen's far-right by 8-10 percentage points, Macron needs a course correction. Attal's recent popularity surge, surpassing even former PM Edouard Philippe, makes him a potentially appealing face to energise voters.

Despite long-standing loyalty to Macron, Attal hasn't been part of the president's inner circle. This strategic distance could offer a fresh perspective while maintaining continuity at the helm.

This appointment signifies a renewed effort by Macron to reconnect with the electorate and navigate the challenges of his second term. Whether it bears fruit, however, remains to be seen.
