Moldova's Sandu decries war's impact on values, receives Timișoara award
Moldovan President Maia Sandu denounced the "erosion of European and human values" wrought by the war in Ukraine during the ceremony for the inaugural "Timișoara for European Values" award bestowed upon her today.
Sandu emphasized the need for global unity in upholding these values in the face of such challenges.
Timișoara Mayor Dominic Fritz highlighted Sandu's unwavering stance against the invasion, praising her "courageous voice" and her leadership in guiding Moldova away from Russian influence. He described the award as a recognition of Sandu's "extraordinary efforts and unwavering commitment to European values."
Sandu expressed her deep gratitude, acknowledging the award as a tribute to the Moldovan people's continued pursuit of "freedom, peace, and democracy." She underscored the fragility of these values in the wake of the war, emphasizing the dangers of "populism and deceit" that threaten "open discourse, trust in institutions, and mutual trust."
