Romanians in Spain will get Spanish citizenship without renouncing the Romanian one
Romanians living in Spain will be able to get Spanish citizenship without renouncing the Romanian one. An agreement in this sense would be signed in the first months of this year, when the Spanish prime minister is expected in Romania. According to Rador, the status of a Spanish citizen will give Romanians the opportunity to get better-paid jobs, but also positions in the police, army or administration.
The approach in this sense started in November 2022, when the joint meeting of the Governments of Romania and Spain took place. Then a joint work route and bilateral commissions were established to put this dual citizenship into practice.
Obtaining this right by the Romanians also brings specific advantages. For example, Romanians will be able to have access to jobs and positions in the police, army or administration, and holding a Spanish passport would bring them related advantages, including visa-free travel in USA.
At this moment, if a Romanian, for example, would like to become a Spanish citizen, he would have to meet certain conditions, the main one is to renounce his Romanian citizenship. It should be noted that residents of the Spanish state, including Romanians, have the same rights as citizens of the state they moved to.
Spain is one of the European states that does not accept dual citizenship by organic law, making only two exceptions: for France and Portugal.
