U.S., Moldova discuss justice reforms and anti-corruption efforts
Moldovan Justice Minister Veronica Mihailov-Moraru met with U.S. Ambassador to Moldova Kent D. Logsdon and new USAID Mission Chief Jeff Bryan on January 20 to discuss the ongoing reforms in Moldova's justice system.
The meeting focused on the results of the pre-vetting exercise, which led to the formation of a new Superior Council of Prosecutors (CSP) and Superior Council of the Magistracy (CSM). The CSP is responsible for appointing, dismissing, and disciplining prosecutors, while the CSM is responsible for appointing, dismissing, and disciplining judges.
Ambassador Logsdon reiterated the United States' commitment to supporting Moldova's justice reforms and anti-corruption efforts.
The officials also discussed other justice sector projects, such as the "Model Courts" project. This project has modernised three courts in Moldova - Balti, Edinet, and Ungheni - and is expected to select new pilot courts in the future.
