Chisinau takes flight: Competition heats up, fares down
Moldovan skies promise brighter horizons for air travellers, with authorities hinting at increased competition and potentially lower fares from Chisinau International Airport.
This comes amid a 23% surge in passenger traffic last year, highlighting the country's growing aviation appeal.
Mircea Pascaluta, State Secretary at the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development, outlined efforts to woo more airlines onto the tarmac. "We're aiming to create an environment where airlines, spurred by healthy competition, offer passengers attractive fare options," he stated. "It's not just about convenience, but affordability. I'm confident we'll see significant progress in that direction, and not too far down the runway."
Reinforcing this optimism is the return of Wizz Air, one of Europe's largest airlines, with five weekly flights slated for April. This move alone injects a healthy dose of competition into the market, setting the stage for a potential price shake-up.
With over 3 million passengers taking to the skies in 2023, Moldova's aviation sector is undoubtedly on the rise. As authorities continue to court more airlines and foster competition, Chisinau appears poised to shed its image as a pricier air travel hub, offering Moldovan citizens and international travellers alike a more budget-friendly gateway to the region.
