Slovakia to block Ukraine's NATO bid, says PM Fico
Slovakia's Prime Minister Robert Fico has said his country will block Ukraine's bid to join NATO, warning that it could trigger World War III.
Fico, who is known for his pro-Russian views, made the remarks ahead of a meeting with Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal on January 24, according to The Kyiv Independent.
“I will tell him that we will block and veto Ukraine's accession to NATO because it would be nothing but the basis for World War III,” Fico said.
Fico also said that Ukraine would have to cede territory to Russia to reach a peace agreement.
Fico's announcement is a blow to Ukraine, which is hoping to join NATO to protect itself from Russia.
