Moldova seeks reintegration of Transnistria amidst geopolitical uncertainty
Chisinau authorities are intensifying efforts to reintegrate the Transnistrian region within the constitutional framework of the Republic of Moldova, as highlighted by political commentator Mihai Isac in a recent appearance on Radio Moldova's "Parallel 47" program.
He contends that Transnistria serves as a strategic asset for the Russian Federation's hybrid war operations against Moldova, and potentially against other regional actors such as Ukraine and Romania.
"Beyond its strategic utility, Transnistria symbolises a persistent Russian presence in the region," Isac elaborated. "Since the 2014 Dignity Revolution, it has functioned as the sole remaining foothold. However, with Ukraine's evolving stance towards Transnistria, an opportunity arises for Moldova to reclaim its constitutional authority in the eastern segment of the nation." Isac further emphasised that prior to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, initiating such a move would have been significantly more challenging.
Addressing concerns about potential pressure tactics from Tiraspol, Isac reaffirmed the applicability of the recently enacted Customs Code provisions to all economic entities operating within Moldova's sovereign territory. He reiterated the unwavering stance of Chisinau against any form of intimidation from the self-proclaimed Transnistrian leadership.
