Moldova's top diplomat decorated, announces resignation
Nicu Popescu, Moldova's Foreign Minister, received the nation's highest honour, the Order of the Republic, from President Maia Sandu on Wednesday. The ceremony recognized Popescu's pivotal role in advancing Moldova's European integration ambitions, culminating in the recent launch of EU accession negotiations.
A Visionary Leader:
President Sandu lauded Popescu's achievements, calling him "a visionary diplomat and perhaps the most outstanding Foreign Minister" Moldova has ever seen. She commended his efforts, alongside his team, in "putting the Republic of Moldova back on the world map."
Popescu's Commitment:
Despite receiving the prestigious award, Popescu surprised the nation by announcing his resignation later that day. He cited personal reasons and a need for a break, emphasising his intention to continue working for Moldova's European future in other capacities.
A Short Tenure with Lasting Impact:
Popescu's tenure as Foreign Minister, though brief, has been undeniably impactful. Under his leadership, Moldova secured landmark achievements, including:
- Opening EU accession negotiations: A historical milestone placing Moldova firmly on the path towards European integration.
- Boosting international recognition: Repositioning Moldova as a respected player on the international stage.
- Strengthening diplomatic ties: Fostering closer relationships with key partners like the European Union and the United States.
Moving Forward:
Popescu will remain in office until January 29th, ensuring a smooth transition. Mihai Popșoi, currently the Vice President of Parliament, is set to take the helm as the new Foreign Minister. While Popescu's departure marks the end of a significant chapter, his contributions to Moldova's European journey will undoubtedly continue to resonate.
