Germany ramps up Ukraine support: 10,000 troops trained, weapons flown in
Germany's military support for Ukraine climbed to new heights on Tuesday, as Defense Minister Boris Pistorius unveiled a multi-pronged package of training, equipment, and weapons transfers, Tagesspiegel reports, quoted by UNIAN.
Highlighting air defence as a "top priority," Pistorius committed to providing vital Iris-T systems and Gepard artillery alongside an ambitious plan to train 10,000 Ukrainian troops on German soil throughout 2024.
Germany Pledges Enhanced Firepower:
Acknowledging the need for a "faster weapons pipeline," Pistorius announced a significant boost in offensive capabilities. Over 80 Leopard 1 tanks, additional artillery pieces, and ammunition will bolster Ukraine's ground war efforts. Armoured personnel carriers, engineering tanks, and crucial logistical support vehicles further solidify Germany's commitment to Ukraine's battlefield needs.
Taking to the Skies:
In a first for German military aid, Pistorius also revealed the transfer of six decommissioned Sea King Mk41 helicopters. These versatile workhorses will provide reconnaissance capabilities over the Black Sea and enhance troop transportation. Comprehensive training for Ukrainian pilots and technicians accompanies this new aerial addition.
Financial Backing Underscores Long-Term Support:
Germany's financial commitment underscores its unwavering support for Ukraine. With total military assistance approaching 6 billion euros since the war began, and a further 7 billion pledged for 2024, Berlin cements its position as a major military backer of Kyiv's resistance.
