Mircea Geoană proposes Iasi and Chisinau as possible European Capitals of Culture in the future
The deputy general secretary of NATO, Mircea Geoană, says that, after Sibiu and Timișoara, the next Romanian city that should apply for the title of European Capital of Culture is Iasi, but only together with Chisinau. These statements were made for the Romanian media.
"I will fight for the next European cultural capital of Romania to be Iasi and Chisinau together. It can be done, it takes a while, but we know how it works. We, Sibiu, convinced the Luxembourgers to let us do it together with them, it was not Romania's turn, and we succeeded by convincing the Luxembourgers to let us too. If we decide to bring the Republic of Moldova with us, in Europe, which is possible, it is something I also want and I am working very hard in this direction, I think we could also find a combination with another European capital and if we want it faster, I think that's also possible", said Mircea Geoană.
The deputy general secretary of NATO stated that it is real that the Republic of Moldova will be in the European Union by 2030. European Capital of Culture is an honorary title conferred by the European Parliament to one or more cities for one year.
