In a recent interview with Romanian media, Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoană asserted the alliance's urgent need to harness the immense potential of AI while mitigating its risks.

"The capabilities of commercially available AI today are astounding," Geoană stated. "From web design and business optimization to creative and artistic applications, it's clear that embracing AI responsibly will be crucial for individuals and societies alike. This new technological landscape is complex, fraught with challenges, but we must navigate it. While a major war may be less likely, navigating the delicate balance between technological advancement and ethical considerations will be the defining struggle of our era."

Geoană emphasised that harnessing AI effectively for collective defence and security demands absolute trust both among member states and within the public sphere. This concern echoes growing worries regarding Russia's and other actors' opaque and potentially nefarious AI endeavours.

The alliance's focus on AI stems from its recognition of the technology's transformative potential across various domains. Quantum computing, alongside AI and biotechnology, is now readily available, converging with the green technology revolution to create an unprecedented confluence of disruptive forces. As Geoană pointed out, mastering and responsibly deploying AI within this dynamic landscape is paramount for NATO's future preparedness and effectiveness.
