Moldova's EU path: Thorny, yet supported by Romania
The road to European Union membership for Moldova remains arduous, but Romanian Ambassador Cristian-Leon Țurcanu insists unwavering commitment to reforms and modernization holds the key to success.
Addressing a ceremony marking Local Autonomy Day, he acknowledged the turbulent times and the stark reality of the war in Ukraine, yet emphasised the undeniable European destiny of Moldova's citizens.
"Soon it will be two years since the East's inability to deliver prosperity became apparent," Țurcanu declared, praising the efforts of Moldovan authorities towards European integration. ["The EU's decision to open accession talks] is your merit, but also that of every citizen you serve daily. This path is no easy feat, demanding ongoing reforms and modernization – the hallmarks of Chisinau's pro-European leadership."
Acknowledging the complexities and sacrifices inherent in such reforms, the Ambassador reaffirmed Romania's unwavering support: "Romania is, was, and always will be by your side, in every corner of this nation – from Ocnița to Ialoveni to Vulcănești." He highlighted tangible evidence of this partnership, citing hundreds of twinned towns, modernised schools and libraries, infrastructure projects like water provision, and expertise sharing across various sectors.
Looking ahead, Țurcanu outlined ambitious joint plans that prioritise improving daily life through bridge construction and school bus procurement, alongside cultural initiatives like theatre development. His message resonated with a resounding call for unity: "Together, we can achieve great things. We have the plans, the resources, and the unwavering spirit to pave the way for a brighter European future for Moldova."
