Sandu: European path is choice of Moldovan people

Moldova's President Maia Sandu said on Sunday that the goal of both central and local authorities is to transform the country into a European nation where people live in prosperity and security.

Speaking at the event celebrating the Professional Day of Local Autonomy and the Public Administration Worker, Sandu said that important steps have been taken in recent years to move Moldova closer to the European Union, but that it is important to show that the choice of the European path is also the choice of the people.

"Your contribution to the referendum this fall, when people will make an important choice not only for their lives, but also for the lives of their children and grandchildren, for the fate of the country is crucial," Sandu said. "Dear mayors and local elected officials, you are on the front lines of the needs of the people in our country. It is on your shoulders to meet the most urgent expectations - running water, good roads, safe transportation, modern schools and kindergartens, well-maintained villages and towns. But our country now has, through its entry into the path of European integration, a historic opportunity for development," Sandu said.

Sandu's call for a referendum on Moldova's EU membership was approved by Parliament last year. The referendum is expected to be held in the fall, alongside presidential elections.
