UNRWA funding in limbo: Romania joins suspension
Romania has announced the suspension of its voluntary contributions to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), citing allegations that agency employees were involved in a Hamas attack on Israel in October 2023.
No new RO voluntary contribution to #UNRWA until the investigation is finalised. Romania continues to prioritise the needs of t/ Palestinian civilians, especially those affected by the conflict in Gaza. RO coordinates closely with EU & Int'l partners.

"No new voluntary contributions from Romania to UNRWA until the investigation is completed," the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs declared on social media. "Romania continues to prioritise the needs of the Palestinian civilian population, particularly those affected by the conflict in Gaza. Romania is closely coordinating with its external partners."
This decision comes amidst a growing trend of countries pausing their funding for UNRWA, including Austria, the United Kingdom, Germany, the United States, Australia, and Canada. These suspensions stem from accusations that some UNRWA employees participated in the Hamas attack on October 7th, which Israel has vehemently condemned.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres responded to these concerns by emphasising accountability, starting on Sunday, "Any UN employee involved in acts of terrorism will be held accountable," as reported by Reuters. He also urged governments to maintain their support for UNRWA, highlighting the crucial role it plays in aiding Palestinian refugees.
