Usatîi resigns, eyes Moldovan presidency
Renato Usatîi, leader of Moldova's Our Party, resigned from his Bălți City Council seat on Monday, citing upcoming parliamentary and presidential elections.
"These elections require decisive actions," Usatîi said, emphasising his intention to run for president. "I don't want accusations of using the council as a campaign springboard."
He expressed belief in the need for "categorical change" and early parliamentary elections, potentially aligning with calls for snap polls by other opposition parties.
Usatîi's resignation follows incumbent President Maia Sandu's announcement of seeking re-election. Pro-European parties PPDA, LOC, and the Party of Change have also formed an electoral bloc for the presidential race.
