Moldova vows aid to farmers hit by Transnistrian taxes
Moldovan authorities pledged to assist farmers in the Dubăsari district, impacted by "illegal" taxes imposed by the unrecognised Transnistrian administration.
Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration Oleg Serebrian emphasised the government's commitment: "We are determined to help these agricultural producers. After calculations are made, we will offer material assistance to compensate for these illegal taxes," he declared.
Talks today with farmers aim to determine the extent of support needed. Compensation will be based on estimated agricultural production for the year, ensuring aid aligns with actual agricultural activity.
The Transnistrian move followed the implementation of Moldova's new customs code on January 1st, requiring Transnistrian businesses to pay customs duties to Moldova. In response, Transnistria imposed taxes on Dubăsari farmers whose land lies beyond the Camenca-Tiraspol road.
Currently, 15 businesses in the affected villages hold around 950 tons of corn, 780 tons of sunflower seeds, 770 tons of wheat, and 50 tons of barley in storage facilities on the Transnistrian side of the road, highlighting the potential impact of the tax dispute.
