Breakthrough: EU approves €50 billion for Ukraine
In a display of solidarity, European Union leaders unanimously approved a €50 billion financial aid package for Ukraine, announced European Council President Charles Michel on Thursday.
This decision marks a significant turnaround after Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban initially blocked the package in December.
"This ensures steady, long-term, and predictable financing for Ukraine," declared Michel, emphasising the EU's unwavering commitment. "The EU is taking the lead and responsibility in supporting Ukraine; we know what is at stake" (Source: Charles Michel, Twitter).
The package consists of €20 billion in grants for immediate needs and €30 billion in loans for long-term economic recovery. This critical financial support comes at a crucial time for Ukraine, as the war with Russia continues to inflict immense damage on the country.
The united stance by EU leaders underscores the bloc's strong condemnation of the Russian aggression and its determination to support Ukraine's fight for sovereignty and territorial integrity.
