Canada vows steady support for war-torn Ukraine: Joly in Kyiv
Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly travelled to Kyiv, Ukraine, following a visit to Moldova, to reaffirm her country's unwavering support for the nation embroiled in war with Russia.
During meetings with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba, Joly discussed several key issues.
Continued Support and Peace Efforts: Zelenskyy expressed gratitude for Canada's "unwavering support and trust," highlighting the ongoing need for international solidarity. Discussions centred on long-term support for Ukraine, including the "Peace Formula" proposed by Zelenskyy outlining steps towards ending the conflict.
Addressing Key Concerns: Joly raised the alarming issue of mass abductions of Ukrainian children by Russia, demanding their safe return. Other topics included establishing free trade between Ukraine and Canada, utilising frozen Russian assets to aid Ukraine, providing military assistance, and maintaining robust sanctions against Russia.
Meeting with Victims and Supporters: Joly's agenda also includes meeting families and children directly affected by the war's devastation. She will also engage with local organisations supporting victims of conflict-related violence, emphasising Canada's commitment to humanitarian efforts.
Strong Message of Solidarity: Joly reiterated Canada's unwavering commitment to Ukraine, stating, "Canada is a proud friend of Ukraine, and our message to Ukrainians is simple: we are not going anywhere." This visit aimed to solidify Canada's position as a steadfast ally, both politically and in practical terms, as Ukraine navigates the challenges of war and seeks a path towards peace.
