US strikes Houthi missile sites in Yemen
The United States military conducted airstrikes against five Houthi missile sites in Yemen on Sunday, a day after a joint US-UK air campaign targeted the rebel group in response to attacks on Red Sea shipping, Agrepres.ro reports.
The US military "conducted a self-defence strike" against a "Houthi-rebel land-attack cruise missile," followed by strikes against "four anti-ship cruise missiles, all prepared to launch against ships in the Red Sea," according to US Central Command (CENTCOM) on social media.
"The US identified the missiles in Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen and determined they posed an imminent threat to US Navy and commercial vessels operating in the region," CENTCOM added.
On Saturday, the US and UK carried out airstrikes against the Iran-backed Houthi rebels - their third joint military action in response to attacks on commercial shipping in the Red Sea.
The Houthis began attacking Red Sea shipping in November, claiming to target Israeli-linked vessels "in solidarity" with Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, where Israel is engaged in conflict with the Islamist militant group Hamas.
The US and UK have responded with airstrikes against the Houthis, who have since designated US and UK interests as legitimate targets.
