This highlights ongoing concerns about rising measles cases in Europe.

Travel-Linked Case:

The National Agency for Public Health (ANSP) identified the case and traced its origin to travel between January 11th and 24th in Romania, where a measles outbreak is ongoing. The child hadn't received the MMR vaccine, which is administered in three doses in Moldova.

Wider Concerns:

This marks the third confirmed measles case in Moldova this year, and the second linked to travel. Health officials emphasise the lack of epidemiological connection between the cases, indicating isolated occurrences rather than sustained local transmission.

European Trend:

The World Health Organization (WHO) has sounded alarms about a significant increase in measles cases across Europe, with neighbouring countries particularly affected. Romania declared a measles epidemic with over 4,600 confirmed cases and several deaths.

Serious Risks:

Measles is a highly contagious viral infection that can lead to severe complications like pneumonia, encephalitis, and even death, especially in young children. Experts warn that a single case can infect up to 18 others, highlighting the importance of vaccination.
