The breach "will unfortunately lead to a lot of hacking, phishing and targeted doxxing," Alon Gal, co-founder of Israeli cybersecurity monitoring firm Hudson Rock, wrote on LinkedIn. He called it "one of the most significant leaks I've seen."

Twitter has not yet commented on Gal's report, which it published late last year, and it is unclear whether any action has been taken.

There are still no clues as to the identity of the hackers or when the attack was carried out. The breach may have occurred in 2021, before the network was bought by Elon Musk. Claims about this breach have varied – initially there was talk of 400 million leaked email addresses and phone numbers.
