North Korea Fires Cruise Missiles into Sea of Japan, Escalating Tensions
North Korea ignited further regional tensions on Wednesday by firing multiple cruise missiles into the Sea of Japan, as reported by Agerpres.ro.
The South Korean military detected the launch, marking the latest incident in Pyongyang's ongoing weapons testing program.
"Our military detected several unidentified cruise missiles launched into the waters east of Wonsan today at around 09:00 (00:00 GMT) and South Korea and US intelligence are conducting a detailed analysis," the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said.
This launch comes on the heels of Monday's test of a new multiple rocket launcher system, showcasing North Korea's escalating efforts to develop its military capabilities.
Analysts highlight that the regime has intensified military tests throughout the year. These include tests of what North Korea describes as a "submarine-launched nuclear weapon system" and a solid-fuel hypersonic ballistic missile. Pyongyang has also frequently tested cruise missiles, a type of weapon analysts speculate could be supplied to Russia for use in Ukraine.
Amid tightening ties with Moscow, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un made a surprise visit to Russia in September for discussions with President Vladimir Putin. South Korea and the United States warn that this cooperation includes weapons exchanges defying UN sanctions, with North Korea potentially receiving technical assistance for its satellite spy program.
