Macron Wrongly Blamed Over EU Rape Law - Alexe
French President Emmanuel Macron has been falsely accused of excluding rape from a new European law on violence against women.
The accusation, which spread widely on social media, is based on a misunderstanding of the law.
The law, agreed by the European Parliament and EU countries on February 6, 2023, does not include a definition of rape. This is because some EU countries, including France, Germany, and Hungary, opposed including rape in the law, arguing that the EU does not have competence in this area.
However, the law does include numerous measures to combat violence against women. Journalist Dan Alexe points out that this includes:
- A requirement for EU countries to criminalize marital rape
- Specialized support services for victims of sexual violence
- A requirement for EU countries to collect data on violence against women
Dan Alexe asserts that while a major step forward against violence against women in Europe, the false accusation against Macron highlights the need for clarity about the law and underscores the importance of combating misinformation.
