Energy compensation changes in Moldova
Moldova will discontinue providing energy bill credits during the cold season, announced Alexei Buzu, Minister of Labor and Social Protection.
The government plans to implement a system of direct monetary payments to citizens.
"The government will continue to support citizens," explains Buzu. "The change for the upcoming year means registered citizens will receive monetary compensation rather than bill credits. These payments will be made via card or the postal service."
Moldova currently has 790,000 households receiving compensation. While a majority may qualify as energy vulnerable, Buzu clarified that direct payment aims to support a wider range of citizens.
This season's compensation budget is 2.7 billion lei, a 30% reduction from last year's 3.7 billion lei. Decreased energy tariffs contribute to this, according to representatives from the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection.
Moldovan citizens can access the direct payments by registering on the compensatii.gov.md platform. This includes an increase in monthly 'Help at the Meter' support from 700 to 800 lei, resulting in a 20% expansion of covered households.
Registration deadlines fall on the 25th of each month between November 2023 and March 2024.
