Ilan Șor's Lawyers File Constitutional Challenge
The Supreme Court of Justice (CSJ) has granted a request filed by lawyers of fugitive politician Ilan Șor to raise a constitutional challenge against the decision rendered by the Chișinău Court of Appeal.
The Appeal Court sentenced the former MP to 15 years in prison for involvement in the "Banking Fraud" case.
The challenge claims that certain provisions within the Criminal Procedure Code violate constitutional principles. Attorney Aureliu Colenco, representing Șor, indicated to Radio Moldova that the CSJ has submitted the matter to the Constitutional Court for review. A hearing at the CSJ has been set for April 3rd to address the initial request.
Should the Constitutional Court determine the Code's provisions are in violation, the case against Șor may be sent back to the CSJ for retrial. This could significantly delay a final resolution in the case against Șor, who remains a fugitive.
